West Branch Regional Trail
Over the past several years, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the village of Winfield, and Winfield Riverwalk Committee have been working cooperatively on the development of a segment of the West Branch Regional Trail that will connect residents to Winfield Mounds Forest Preserve, West DuPage Woods Forest Preserve, Wynwood Park, Lions Park, Oakwood Park, downtown Winfield, the Winfield Metra Station, Winfield Riverwalk and Central DuPage Hospital. This segment is one of the critical links remaining to complete the 22 mile long West Branch Regional Trail which will ultimately extend from the North Central DuPage Regional Trail in Hanover Park south to the I&M Canal Trail near Channahon.
The Project will consist of constructing a 10’ wide regional trail and bikeway that meanders through downtown Winfield along the West Branch of the DuPage River. There will be approximately 2.1 miles of crushed limestone screenings, .3 miles of bituminous concrete, and .6 miles on street with striping and signage. It will also include the construction of 350' of Boardwalk, multiple drainage culverts, several interpretive overlooks and a 100’ long x 12’ pre-fabricated steel bridge. The trail will be designed to meet ADA requirements with maximum slopes to not exceed 5 percent. In addition it shall comply with general guidelines for the development of bicycle facilities as called for in the latest AASHTO standards.

The estimated cost of the project is approximately $2.78 million which will be funded by a $2 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Grant (CMAQ), a $100,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity(DECO), $180,000 contribution from the village of Winfield and $500,000 from a combination of yearly appropriated construction development funds and bond funds from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency Planning announced Nov. 12, 2013 that a $2 million dollar Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant for the trail had been awarded to the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and the Village of Winfield.
Phase II engineering was started and will be complete in 2015. Construction of the 3-mile long trail is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2016 and shall be completed by the end of that year. A public open house was held Oct. 28, 2013 at the Winfield Village Hall. Project information and details from the open house include:
